Wednesday 12th November 2008: Airway Workshops
The format of our workshops will be very different from previous years. They are focused on understanding the mechanisms of difficult intubation and why one or more airway devices can be more appropriate for any given clinical situation. The workshops will show you how to –
- Use bespoke problem lists to objectively assess a patient with a known difficult airway.
- Select THE best airway device to deal with that patient’s particular problems.
- Appreciate all the known errors relevant to the device and the difficult airway under consideration and plan to avoid them (‘Contingency Planning’).
In the morning, delegates will be introduced to the assessment method as well as being taught how to competently perform key airway manoeuvres such as -
- Direct Laryngoscopy (including straight blades, bougies etc).
- Indirect Laryngoscopy (Glidescope, Airtraq etc).
- Awake Fibreoptic Intubation.
- Intubation via an LMA.
- Bonfils.
- Cricothyroidotomy / Jet Ventilation.
In the afternoon, delegates will practice matching these basic skills to various simulations of patients with anticipated difficult airways (common and rare pathologies to demonstrate the relevance of the method).
These simulation workshops contain a wealth of clinical material (videos, photos, scans etc) and have proved extremely popular in our own previous meetings. Delegates will receive a course manual in advance of the workshops.
To ensure small group sizes (1:4 faculty/delegate ratio) participants will be strictly limited (128 max).
